Why Man City star Bernardo Silva ran back onto pitch as Portugal celebrated goal against Switzerland

Emotions were running high for Portugal when they took the lead in their World Cup knockout game with Switzerland.

Despite the wild celebrations that saw players celebrate with fans in the corner of the stadium, Bernardo Silva had the presence of mind to run back onto the pitch.

Goncalo Ramos, who was starting ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, put his team 1-0 up on what was his first start for his country.

But with the squad rejoicing with the substitutes off the pitch, the Manchester City star quickly realised this could backfire and ran back onto the field of play by the corner flag.

England fans may remember Kieran Trippier doing a similar thing in 2018.

This is because it was thought that the opposition team could restart the match if all ten outfield players had left the field.

However, FIFA later debunked this theory that such an incident could happen.

Under Law 8, one of the conditions for a kick-off to restart play after a goal has been scored is "all players, except the player taking the kick-off, must be in their own half of the field of play."

It therefore seems that Silva need not have worried and maybe players do not realise this theory is not true.

It ended up being an impressive night for Portugal as they hammered Switzerland 6-1.

Ramos went on to get a hat-trick, with Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao also scoring.

Manuel Akanji got a consolation for Switzerland, with Portugal setting themselves up with a last eight clash against Morocco on Saturday.

And the Manchester City man has since come out and defended Cristiano Ronaldo after he walked off at the end of the game rather than celebrate with his teammates.

Speaking to the Portuguese media, Silva said: "I think he is helping us. Today he showed a great personality inside the dressing room, and he was fine.

"Of course, sometimes he might not be happy because everyone wants to play. But he helped us a lot in his role and his attitude was great.''

But it remains to be seen if the incident will impact Portugal against Morocco.
